Why the Next D&D Book Is A Martial Class Supplement

After months of silence, Wizards of the Coast recently released their D&D 2026 roadmap, which has featured new books, accessories and events built around unique themes known as D&D Seasons. One big question, however, is what will be included in an unnamed book slated for release in the Winter of 2026. We do know that it will be focused around a “Season of Champions” taking place between October and December, which has lead some to speculate this it will in fact be a new Dark Sun book.
Based on what we’ve seen with recent Unearthed Arcana playtests over the past year, however, our belief is that we’ll be seeing a new D&D martial class supplement, with new player focused content for the Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Rogue, Paladin and Ranger. Below, we break down all the evidence.

Why a martial class sourcebook is likely coming to D&D
There are a few good reasons what a new supplement will be focused on martials:
New martial subclasses featured in Unearthed Arcana playtests
In October 2025, Wizards of the Coast rolled out the Subclasses Update playtest. The packet updated five D&D martial subclasses that originally appeared in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything and the 2014 Player’s Handbook. Specifically: the Oathbreaker Paladin, Cavalier Fighter, Path of the Ancestral Guardian (now known as the Path of the Spiritual Guardian Barbarian), Path of the Storm Herald Barbarian and Way of the Drunken Master (now renamed the Warrior of Intoxication Monk).
This was followed up in January 2026 with the Mystic Subclasses playtest that also includes three brand new martial classes: the Warrior of the Mystic Arts Monk (a spellcasting Monk that blends Sorcerer magic with martial combat), the Oath of the Spellguard Paladin (a defensive, anti-mage Paladin built to intercept spells) and the Magic Stealer Rogue (who can counter casters and channel magic into sneak attacks).
Wizards of the Coast has not confirmed what book (if any) these eight new and revised subclasses would appear in, but they all share one thing in common: they’re all martial in nature.

A Season of Champions sounds perfect for martial classes
While it is possible that the Season of Champions will indeed be related to Dark Sun (perhaps due to the Gladiator Fighter subclass), that does seem a bit of an odd choice (the Dark Sun Unearthed Arcana was referred to as the Apocalyptic Subclasses playtest, so the “Season of the Apocalypse” seems more likely). From a marketing standpoint, the Fighter Champion is an iconic D&D martial class, so “Champions” seems to fit the combat-focused theme nicely.
We also have some precedence to draw on in the form of the Season of Magic, which is built around the Arcana Unleashed supplement, featuring a range of new magic subclasses. Thematically, moving from magic to martial, makes logical sense given that these are the two core categories of class play.

The timing fits other Unearthed Arcana playtests
The Arcane Subclasses playtest was launched in late June 2025, with an Updated playtest coming out in September 2025. The Arcana Unleashed sourcebook featuring those subclasses will be coming out in early September 2026, so we’re looking at about a year from the last playtest to the launch of the book. This was also the case with the Horror Subclasses playtest, which launched in May 2025 and will appear in the new Ravenloft: The Horrors Within supplement coming out in June 2026 (again, a little over a year). Notably, it’s part of the Season of Horror running from June ot August.
The Subclasses Update, which featured the five martial subclasses, was released on October 31st, 2025 . This would put it squarely in line with the new Season of Champions, which runs from October to December 2026.
What might be included in a new martial class sourcebook?
If indeed the upcoming book is geared towards martials, it’s likely we’ll see the following:
- New subclasses: The eight subclasses featured in the Subclasses Update and Mystic Subclasses playtests will likely be included.
- New Weapon Mastery: It’s possible we may see additional Weapon Mastery options given that this is a core part of the D&D 5.5e rules for martials.
- New equipment: With an emphasis on martial classes, we’ll likely see new combat-focused weapons and gear.
- New rules: The new Arcana Unleashed supplement introduces several new mechanics (including magic items that level up with their owners), so it’s possible we’ll see similar rules for martials.

Final Thoughts
While the upcoming “Season of Champions” and its core book remain a mystery, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that martial classes will be the primary focus. Of course, things can always change, and if nothing else Wizards of the Coast’s publishing schedule can be chaotic.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this new mystery book in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as it’s made available.
